  The Exam
 
  • Who?:  Optometry applicants desiring a Arizona license. Applicants who wish to obtain a licensure to practice Optometry in Arizona must have passed all parts of the National Board Examination within the past five years in order to be eligible to sit for the Arizona examination. Please note that the Board is in the process of having the rule amended to ten years. If the rule amendment is approved and the state date is granted, the rule will be effective November 2, 2010. The effective date of the new rule will be January 2, 2011. Please contact the Board for more information at www.optometry.az.gov

  • What?: The Jurisprudence examination is the only additional testing currently required for regular applicants for an Arizona optometry licensure. To be licensed, an applicant shall obtain a score of at least 75% on a jurisprudence examination that assesses knowledge of Arizona's statutes and rules relating to optometry. An applicant may take the jurisprudence examination at any time after submitting to the Board the application form required under R4-21-201(B) or R4-21-202(B).The complete set of statutes and rules can be downloaded by visiting the website at www.optometry.az.gov/licensing.asp.

  • When?: The Jurisprudence Exam is offered the second Friday of each month. See www.optometry.az.gov/licensing.asp for a listing of dates for each month.An applicant who fails the jurisprudence examination may retake the examination one time within six months from the date of the original examination.

  • Where?: The exam is administered at 10:00 a.m. in the conference room 230 at the Board office located at 1400 W. Washington St., Phoenix, AZ 85007.

  • Why?: The Arizona Board of Examiners in Optometry administers and enforces the provisions of Arizona Optometry Law to ensure the highest quality of eye care is provided to the citizens of Arizona.

The Board examines, licenses, and regulates the profession of Optometric Doctors (O.D.) in the state of Arizona, as well as regulates out-of-state contact lens dispensers.
